Why is Alcohol Addiction Recovery Important?

Alcohol addiction is one of the most common addiction problems in the U.S. The affordability and ease of access of alcohol makes it an ideal substance for abuse. However, that also means it’s a difficult substance to recover from. You must relearn how to live without something that can be found everywhere while handling the other repercussions of addiction. While getting your life back on track is not necessarily easy, it is certainly feasible. Here are a few things you should be doing as you settle back into life without alcohol.

Find a Sober Friend Group
to help with your
Alcohol Addiction Recovery

Of course not every friend you associate with must be sober but having a sober group of people around you is a great support system. These friends can come from an actual support group for ex-alcoholics or elsewhere. Those that are not sober and want to remain in your life must be comfortable spending time with you sans alcohol. People who aren’t willing are not a good influence on your recovery or your life. Do not be afraid to cut negative ties with people.

Repair Any Damaged Relationships

If your addiction caused you to damage a friendship or other relationship with someone in your life, now is the time to make amends. Though they may be pleased that you are in recovery, it is often not enough to make up for any harm you have caused. Sit down with the person and have an open conversation about the damage, what can be done, and how you plan to fix it. It is very important that you follow through with any promises you make.

Build a New Repertoire of Activities

Many activities incorporate alcohol in Western society. People who have never experienced addiction often can’t picture an activity that doesn’t include at least a little alcohol. Finding activities that can be enjoyed without alcohol will be an important part of your recovery. Your support group or newfound sober friends are a great place to start as they will either be willing to  eliminate the alcohol aspect of an activity or suggest activities that can be enjoyed without alcohol. As you get used to your new social life, any sober people in your life can be an invaluable resource.

Correct Any Poor Lifestyle Habits

One of the big reasons people develop an alcohol addiction is simply feeling bad. Whether from diagnosed depression or generalized negative feelings, alcohol is a common substance used to feel better. Now that you are sober, it is time to correct anything in your life that could have been the cause of your negative feelings. Diet is one of the easiest things to change in your life. Many people struggle with eating a well rounded diet, leading to nutritional gaps which impact mood. If you’re not particularly knowledgeable in nutrition, consider speaking with a nutritionist and planning a diet that reverses your deficiencies and maintains healthy nutrient levels. You should also work to incorporate regular exercise and quality sleep in order to feel your best. While readjusting to life without alcohol can be difficult, you can take comfort in knowing that the hardest part is over. You are in recovery, and all that is left is making the rest of your life better. Reestablish positive relationships, seek new friends, and correct your unhealthy habits.

You’ll be the healthiest, most well-rounded person you know in no time.
